Two years go, five states legalised the use of medical cannabis for select ailments, pushing the number of states that have chosen to allow physicians to prescribe cannabis in 28 states. Studies done in recent years have proven it’s uses medicinally, and shown it to be less harmful than alcohol and cigarettes in moderation.

The following celebrities use their star-status to advocate for marijuana legalisation, and educate society on the natural plants facts and benefits.

Willie Nelson

He has been a longtime supporter and very vocal in ending marijuana prohibition. He is a famous advocate for ending the longtime fight against marijuana, and is on the advisory board for The National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) working to reform marijuana laws. Willie has even launched his own marijuana strain, “Willie’s Reserve”, and guarantees it’s top-notch. Willie has said:

“I think people need to be educated to the fact that marijuana is not a drug. Marijuana is a flower. God put it here.”

Snoop Dogg

He is one of the most iconic celebrities known for marijuana consumption and supporting the end of marijuana prohibition. A dream of his is to convince the White House to legalise weed. He even publicly advocates for the medical benefits it offers and positive effects it would have on the economy. He is known for smoking infinite amounts of marijuana, and this past April invested in a California company, Eaze, that delivers medical marijuana to your doorstep.

Bill Maher

Maher has always been known to speak his mind. However, in February 2016 he quite literally put his money where his mouth was when he smoked a marijuana joint live on his HBO talk show Real Time. On top of being one of the biggest advocates for legalisation and reformation, he also sits on the board of the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Though he has stated that legalisation is far from the most pressing issue in American politics, he as also looked at as one of the key figures in the legalisation debate.

Cynthia Nixon

She is currently working on nabbing the biggest role of her career ,Governor of New York. Nixon recently made the legalisation of recreational marijuana the first policy of her gubernatorial campaign. But, it’s not all about raking in that essentially free tax money. Nixon is also bringing attention to the disparity among marijuana incarceration and race. In New York, 80% of marijuana arrests in connection with marijuana were black or Latino. Despite the fact white people and communities of colour use marijuana at roughly equal rates.

Woody Harrelson

Woody has been a supporter and activist since speaking publicly about his cannabis lifestyle in 2001. He has been a keynote speaker at the NORML Conference and is known for his appearances at the legendary Cannabis Cup.  “I do smoke, but I don’t go through all this trouble just because I want to make my drug of choice legal. It’s about personal freedom. We should have the right in this country to do what we want, if we don’t hurt anybody. Seventy-two million people in this country have smoked pot. Eighteen to 20 million in the last year. These people should not be treated as criminals.”

Jesse Ventura

You may know him as a wrestler or as the former Governor of Minnesota. But to those in the legalise-it community, they know him as one of the biggest supporters of the marijuana community in the country.

In his book, he states that marijuana should not only be legal for medical purposes, but for recreational as well. His strong stance on the “War on Drugs” is also what makes him a strong supporter of marijuana. He declares that states that have legalised weed have seen declines in opioid and heroin usage.

Joe Rogan

He has taken a very public stance to educate society on the truth and lies behind the marijuana prohibition. He is a strong supporter for legalisation and appears in many marijuana documentaries expressing his reasoning to fight for an end to prohibition. With such a passion, he is determined to get the facts out about marijuana and the negative stigma the Government promotes.

Wiz Khalifa

This musician has always been very open about his love of marijuana for as long as he’s been in the public eye. Many of his song titles and lyrics have something (or everything) to do with kush. He’s launched his own brand of rolling papers, and has made many investments into the industry. Wiz once told MTV when asked if he thought it should be legalised; “Definitely, legalise it. Please, everybody needs it. The world would be a better place.”

Melissa Etheridge

Etheridge has always been a proponent of marijuana, but it was her battle with breast cancer 12 years ago that made her a legalized marijuana advocate for the ages. She is so involved in the movement that she has launched her own namesake brand of marijuana and marijuana-related items, Etheridge Farms.

Rihanna

She is very proud cannabis enthusiast and does not try to hide her views from anyone. The legendary musician poses in many photos with marijuana and using all forms of social media to express her feelings publicly. Rihanna is an incredible example for those that have such a negative opinion of marijuana, of someone who is exceptionally successful, yet an avid marijuana supporter and consumer.

Marijuana legalisation is no longer regarded as a political joke. While cannabis growers and retailers are beginning to earn the same respect as medicine makers and entrepreneurs in other industries. Celebrities are capable of having an impact on what the public will listen to and believe.
